Sandpaper Vine Blooms at Home

Sandpaper vine (Petrea volubilis) is a fast-growing, evergreen tropical climber famous for its spectacular cascading clusters of purple flowers. It is native to tropical America, specifically regions spanning from Mexico to Paraguay and the Caribbean. Now it is found in plenty on Bangalore.

I was instantly attracted to this vine, when I saw it in Philomena Chechi’s house. She was gracious enough to gift a plant to St Anthony’s Friary, Bangalore. We planted it by our Grape vine plants. It grew fast on to the truss work and then to the building side. And now it is in full bloom.

The name sandpaper vine comes from its stiff, dark green leaves that have a very rough, abrasive texture similar to sandpaper. It produces star-shaped flowers in long, drooping clusters that can reach up to 30 cm in length. It thrives in full sun (at least 6–8 hours daily) for the most profuse flowering. It is considered low-maintenance and relatively pest-resistant. Pruning after flowering helps stimulate new growth and future blooms. While the vibrant purple/violet variety is the most common, there is also a rarer white variety. You must try one of these in your front yard.
