The Purple-rumped Sunbird (Leptocoma zeylonica) is a tiny, often dazzling, resident bird across the Indian Subcontinent, and a familiar sight in gardens and parks, including in Bengaluru. Its juveniles, like those of many bird species, exhibit distinct plumage differences from the adults.
Chicks fledge from the nest in about 17 days. Even after leaving the nest, the juveniles remain dependent on their parents for food and protection for a few more days to weeks. The male, in particular, often continues to feed the fledglings, guiding them to foraging sites and teaching them how to extract nectar and catch insects. Occasionally, "helpers" (possibly from a previous brood) might also assist in feeding the young.
