The Secret of Glossy Metalic Blue of the Purple Sunbird

The Purple Sunbird (Cinnyrisasiaticus) is a vibrant and common avian resident of South and Southeast Asia, extending into parts of the Arabian Peninsula. These small birds, typically less than 10 cm in length, are renowned for their striking sexual dimorphism. The male in breeding plumage is a showstopper, appearing glossy metallic bluish to purplish-black on the upper parts, with dark brown wings and similarly coloured underparts. In contrast, females are far more subdued, sporting an olive-brown upper body and a yellowish underside.

While they can briefly hover like hummingbirds, they more commonly perch at the base of flowers to feed. Their diet isn't solely confined to nectar; they also supplement it with insects, spiders, and occasionally small fruits, especially when feeding their young.
