The Grey-headed Swamphen (Porphyriopoliocephalus) is a large and striking waterbird found across a wide range from the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent to southern China and northern Thailand. They are notably large for a rail, with males averaging around 1 kg and females slightly smaller, characterised by their deep purplish-blue plumage, a prominent red bill and frontal shield (a fleshy plate extending onto the forehead), and long, reddish-orange legs and feet. Their head is typically greyish to bluish, giving them their common name, though plumage can vary regionally.
