The Fulvous Forest Skimmer or Russet Percher

The Fulvous Forest Skimmer or Russet Percher (neurothemis fulvia) is a striking species of dragonfly commonly found across Asia, including abundant populations in India. It's particularly notable for its vibrant coloration and preference for a range of habitats.

Mature males are characterised by a vibrant reddish-brown or fulvous (tawny) body and wings. The wings often have a broad, dark reddish-brown patch extending from the base, with clear, transparent tips. Females are generally duller, with a more subdued brown or yellowish body. Their wings are clear amber-yellow, often with a darker ray extending towards the tip and sometimes an irregular transparent area at the tip. Several forms of females exist, varying in the extent and colour of their wing markings.

They are commonly found near slow-moving streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, and marshes. While they are often seen in forested areas and forest edges, they also thrive in human-modified landscapes such as local parks, gardens, and even agricultural drains. They tend to perch on fallen logs, shrubs, twigs, and other vegetation near water.
