The Common Tailorbird (orthotomus sutorius) is a small, vibrant songbird widespread across tropical Asia, including India. It's best known for its extraordinary nest-building skills, which give it its "tailor”. Common Tailorbirds are highly adaptable and thrive in a variety of environments, including open woodlands, scrublands, forest edges, agricultural areas, and most notably, urban gardens and parks. They are often found in dense undergrowth, where they can remain concealed.
The most remarkable aspect of the Common Tailorbird is its nest. The female, with some material assistance from the male, meticulously "sews" together one or more large, broad living leaves to form a protective cradle.
