The Black-headed Oriole

The Black-headed Oriole (oriolus xanthornus) is a striking and commonly observed passerine bird across tropical southern Asia. Its vibrant plumage and melodious calls make it a favorite among birdwatchers.

Adult Black-headed Orioles are unmistakable. They possess a brilliant golden-yellow body that contrasts sharply with a glossy black head, neck, and upper chest. Their wings are mostly black, often with some yellow edging on the feathers, and their tail is yellow with a black tip. They have distinctive red eyes and a pinkish or flesh-coloured bill. Females are generally similar to males but may be slightly duller.

Black-headed Orioles are often shy and can be difficult to spot amidst the dense foliage, despite their bright colours. However, their loud, fluty, and melodious whistles frequently give away their presence. They forage alone, in pairs, or sometimes in small flocks after the breeding season.
