Black Kites

The Black Kite (milvus migrans) is arguably the most widespread and abundant raptor (bird of prey) in the world, found across large parts of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australasia. In India, it's an incredibly common sight, especially in urban areas, where it plays a vital role as a scavenger.

Black Kites are highly adaptable and thrive in a wide range of habitats, from open plains and grasslands to timbered watercourses, coastal areas, and importantly, densely populated cities. They are frequently seen near human settlements due to their opportunistic feeding habits.

They are omnivorous scavengers and their diet is incredibly varied. While they will hunt small live prey like lizards, small mammals, insects (especially grasshoppers), fish, birds, and even bats, a significant portion of their diet consists of carrion and refuse. They are often seen frequenting garbage dumps, slaughterhouses, and other waste areas, acting as crucial clean-up crew in ecosystems.

Black Kites are well-known for their fearless and aggressive defense of their nests and young. They will mob and dive-bomb much larger birds, including crows and other raptors, that come too close to their nesting site.
