Curtorim Lake, nestled in the village of Curtorim in South Goa, is a serene freshwater body known as part of the "granary of Salcete" due to its historical role in agriculture. It's not just a natural feature but part of a centuries-old network of man-made water bodies crucial for irrigation and traditional fish farming.
The lake is a significant habitat for diverse birdlife, attracting various resident and migratory species, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. Recognising its ecological and cultural importance, Curtorim, including its lakes and fields, has been proposed for designation as a Biodiversity Heritage Site, aiming to preserve its unique ecosystem, traditional practices, and rich biodiversity.
