It is a sunbird prettier than most other sunbirds in India. In northeast India it can be found in parks, gardens, and plantations, as well as more pristine open forest and forest edge environments. Male is bright red with a dark grey belly and glittering blue cap. Female is dull olive-yellow overall with brighter underparts. They feed largely on nectar. They may also take insects, especially when feeding their young. Flight is fast.
I found it in the suburbs of Guwahati, Assam. Having seen many sunbirds in the southern India, I was overjoyed to sight something completely different and gorgeous. It was playing around with its female partner in an urban forest like area.
