Greater Banded Hornet Raids a Paper Wasp Hive

The greater banded hornets, Vespa tropica are raiders of the nests of other wasp species and snatch food to feed themselves and their larvae in their nest.

As I watched a hive of paper wasps, it took me by surprise that a large greater banded hornet flew in like a thug. The hapless paper wasps did not fight or resist, they just moved away, as though nothing was happening. The hornet took almost 20 minutes to raid the hive. It must have drank to its fill, and must have carried enough to feed its larvae. In the wild it is the domination of the mightiest.
