Honey Bees Beat Their Wings 200 Times per Second

Honey Bees, perhaps, are the most fascinating insects on our planet, found in almost every continent. They live in domesticated environments, where flowering plants are abundant. Here I found a few of their colonies, on a tall building, on a tree branch, and in the hollow of a dying rain tree.

Tiny and flying at a speed of 25 km per hour, beating their wings 200 times per second, and possibility a sting if provoked, make photographing honey bees a maddening challenge. As I get closer, I unexpectedly realise that they are undisturbed by the camera, fame, and limelight, that too, in a glamour hungry city like Bangalore. I see, they are totally lost in work, working genuinely, because statistically, a hive of bees, on an average, must fly 1,90,000 kilometers to produce a kilo of honey.

Data shows that colonies of bees are disappearing, and the reason remains unknown, or perhaps we don’t want to know. Shocking but true, in some regions, up to 90% of bees have disappeared.
